The narrative of Untitled (For T.B.R.) follows the seemingly misdirected, yet deeply felt love of a woman for her dog / Burmese rat. The story is taken from an urban myth and Burmese rats don’t actually exist – here the term functions as a vague linguistic signifier to evoke the horrible. Instead of attempting to invent a mythic creature, the Burmese rat remains formless and abstract. Thus, at the core of this video is a vacancy: the rat’s lack of surface details and the density of the photographed black literally render the love object as a void. At first it seems that the creature’s appeal for the woman is the unconditional love of a pet combined with an absorbent surface ready to accept her desires and expectations. The implication appears to be that the best love object is the one on which we can most readily project our hopes, fears, and interpretations. This assumption is at least partially thwarted when the veterinarian also falls in love with the Burmese rat. In that he knows its true and supposedly objectionable nature, the Burmese rat now appears to posses some mysterious, otherworldly power of seduction. In the end, the woman seems less misguided; yet, her (and the veterinarian’s) passion remains, if not absurd, then at least unfathomable.

Die Geschichte von Untitled (For T.B.R.) schildert die verwirrte aber tiefempfundene Liebe einer Frau zu ihrem Hund, einem offenkundigen Requisit aus ausgestopften Kissen, der Burmesischen Ratte. Die Grundidee lehnt sich an ein modernes Großstadtmärchen an (in Wirklichkeit gibt es keine Burmesischen Ratten) und dient als vage linguistische Chiffre der Evozierung des Schrecklichen. Dabei kommt es zu keiner Mythologisierung, bleibt die Burmesische Ratte formlos und abstrakt. Im Kern des Videos steht die Leere. Durch Mangel an Oberflächentextur und tiefe Schwarzwerte wird das Liebesobjekt buchstäblich als Lücke wahrnehmbar, als alles absorbierende Projektionsfläche für alle Wünsche und Bedürfnisse, die von der Frau an ihr Haustier herangetragen werden. So eignet sich die Burmesische Ratte kraft ihrer Undefiniertheit ideal zum Objekt von Hoffnungen, Ängsten, Sorgen und Sehnsüchten. Diese Interpretation wird durch die Reaktion des Tierarztes relativiert: denn obwohl er um die fragwürdige Natur der Burmesischen Ratte weiß, verfällt auch er dem mysteriösen Wesen, das nun mit einer übernatürlichen Verführungsgabe ausgestattet zu sein scheint. Während die Frau aus ihrer Verzückung erwacht, bleibt die Leidenschaft, die der Veterinär nun für das Tier entwickelt, absurd und unergründlich.
